Chiang Mai Green City and the Smart Community focused on the implementation of Community Power for small rural communities. The aim is to develop an affordable/appropriate sustainable energy system to enhance the livelihood and occupation of the community. Community power is defined as decentralized hybrid renewable energy based system from natural resources and agricultural wastes. The integration of PV, biomass gasifier, biodiesel generator and biogas systems are the key for sustainable energy development in the community.

adiCET research team was able to develop a Smart Community that uses 100% electricity from 50.5 kW PV systems. The power is distributed through a Smart DC microgrid network making it the first community in the world that uses DC appliances. The Smart Community is also flexible as the platform to test both AC and DC usability. In addition, adiCET has a 700 kW PV on-grid system for the university as the test-bed and learning center for community power systems. These systems provided real hands-on experience to monitor and assess PV for On-grid and Off-grid System. adiCET aims to be the integrator of green technology and renewable energy. The smart grid is the platform to integrate these technologies.
